My narrative of brand
The brand as a human presence.
An account of meaning, identity and shared experience.
In my account, brands are mental constructs formed between people. They take their place in shared memory, acquire meaning through human values and become recognisable through behaviour.
The metaphor of a living entity offers a way to examine this relationship. A brand has a character, a history and a manner of participating in the world. The metaphor is an interpretive framework, not a claim that an organisation is literally human.
Meaning sustains relevance
A brand develops, matures and can become detached from the world around it. Renewal requires more than a revised appearance. It requires renewed attention to the meaning the brand creates and the relationships it sustains.
Values, character and culture find expression through language, symbols, images and conduct. Their credibility depends on whether that expression is supported by experience.
Authenticity and distinction
For me, authenticity is rooted in ethical values and a substantive difference, sustained with consistency and resilience. The task is to create value that people can recognise intellectually and experience personally.
Self-knowledge before expression
A brand needs to understand its purpose, capabilities, advantage and self-concept. That understanding provides a basis for more coherent decisions. Visual identity should express this philosophical foundation: forms, colours and language should reveal something of the organisation, rather than merely provide an attractive surface.

Across the organisation
Branding is not solely the responsibility of marketing. Identity should inform the organisation’s conduct, including the way its supply chain operates. A claim about reliability, for example, becomes meaningful through dependable decisions and delivery.
My account explores the connections between individual understanding and shared meaning, between symbols, stories and identity. The aim is to give beliefs a form that can be understood and a practical presence that can be experienced.
