Responsibility at the centre of the business

A practical basis for a meaningful social commitment

Mohammadreza Mehran Jalil2-minute read

Social responsibility becomes meaningful for a brand when it is connected to how the business operates. A public narrative of goodwill will lack coherence if the organisation’s treatment of employees, customers or suppliers points in another direction.

The first question is therefore about effects: how does the business affect others, and which responsibilities is it prepared to accept?

Start with material consequences

The priority may be safety, access, resource use or fairness in working relationships. The issue should be selected for its significance and for the organisation’s capacity to influence it. Visibility alone is a weak basis for choosing a commitment.

Mapping positive and negative effects provides a starting point. Listening to those affected is part of understanding the responsibility, rather than a communication exercise added afterwards.

Give commitments ownership and evidence

Values move closer to practice when responsibilities, resources, timescales and evaluation criteria are explicit. A claim about reducing waste, for example, needs a defined scope and a credible way of assessing progress.

Limitations and setbacks should also be visible. Reporting only favourable outcomes narrows the opportunity for learning and meaningful scrutiny.

Build continuity

I see social responsibility as part of a brand’s answer to the question of how it wishes to participate in the world. That answer is repeated in budgets, partnerships, product decisions and everyday conduct.

Communication should explain the work and make it open to questioning. The value of the commitment lies in its substance and continuity, rather than in the prominence of the announcement.

This reflection connects with Brand Philosophy, Medical, Aesthetic & Dental Branding, B2B & Corporate Branding, where these ideas are considered in the context of practical decisions.
