Brands as the stories of our time

Meaning, belonging and the interpretation of experience

Mohammadreza Mehran Jalil2-minute read

The relationship between brands and myths offers a useful interpretive lens. People make sense of the world through stories as well as information. Stories connect otherwise separate experiences and give us a way to recognise, remember and respond.

Some brands consequently acquire meanings that extend beyond the immediate utility of a product. This should not be confused with a belief in the extraordinary power of advertising.

Give the story a basis in experience

A story becomes credible when people encounter evidence of it. Independence requires meaningful choice. Care requires responsiveness. Courage requires decisions that carry consequences for the organisation.

If the narrative remains on the page, the distance between language and reality eventually becomes visible. A story may attract attention; sustained credibility depends on conduct.

Use archetypes as interpretive tools

Archetypes can help a team articulate character, tone and narrative. Choosing a label such as sage or creator does not, however, replace audience research or establish how people will respond.

Symbols acquire different meanings across cultural settings. An image that suggests aspiration to one group may be unfamiliar to another. Interpretation should therefore remain distinct from claims of universal psychological effect.

Ask where the story can be encountered

When developing a narrative, I ask where an audience can experience it. The answer may lie in a welcome, a product, the resolution of a dispute or the behaviour of a team.

A brand earns a place in shared memory when its story is repeatedly supported by ordinary encounters. The narrative is not simply something the organisation tells. It is something others have grounds to recognise.

This reflection connects with Brand Philosophy, Luxury & Premium Branding, where these ideas are considered in the context of practical decisions.
